Dear Senator, The Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (H.R. 1585) recently passed the House of Representatives with strong bipartisan support. I urge you to support a strong companion bill to H.R. 1585 – with key updates and no rollbacks – in the Senate. Your leadership will help increase access to safety and justice for more survivors of domestic violence, many of whom have been unable to find help before. Since VAWA’s inception in 1994, it has served as the cornerstone of our nation’s response to domestic and sexual violence. Each reauthorization has included life-saving improvements for survivors. H.R. 1585 includes crucial but modest improvements to address safe housing, enhance prevention efforts, allow for more comprehensive services, and remove long-standing barriers for underserved survivors. The bill addresses survivors’ urgent needs and invests in strategies so that one day we can live in a world where intimate partner violence and sexual assault no longer exists. Supporting the policies in H.R. 1585 will demonstrate your leadership on gender-based violence and signal to survivors that we will respond to their needs with resources and protections. Survivors and advocates across the country are excited by the passage of H.R. 1585. As a constituent, I urge you to demonstrate your support for survivors of domestic and sexual violence by supporting a strong Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act with key improvements and no rollbacks in the Senate.
